1. Combining Like Terms
Grouping terms with the same variable and exponent
$$ax^n + bx^n = (a+b)x^n$$
Only add or subtract the coefficients (numbers). Variables and exponents stay the same.
Example
Simplify $$5x^2 + 3x - 2x^2 + 7x - 4$$
Show solution
Step 1: Group like terms:
- $$x^2$$ terms: $$(5x^2 - 2x^2) = (5 - 2)x^2 = 3x^2$$
- x terms: $$(3x + 7x) = (3 + 7)x = 10x$$
- Constant: -4
Step 2: Combine all simplified terms.
Result: $$3x^2 + 10x - 4$$
Practice problems
-
Problem 1
Simplify $$4x + 7x - 3x$$
Show solution
Answer: $$8x$$
Step 1: Identify that all terms are like terms (variable x).
Step 2: Combine coefficients: $$(4 + 7 - 3)x = 8x$$.
=> Correct Answer: A ($$8x$$)
-
Problem 2
Simplify $$3x^2 + 5x + 2x^2 - 8x + 6$$
Show solution
Answer: $$5x^2 - 3x + 6$$
Step 1: Group $$x^2$$ terms: $$(3x^2 + 2x^2) = 5x^2$$.
Step 2: Group x terms: $$(5x - 8x) = -3x$$.
Step 3: Keep constant term: + 6.
=> Combined expression $$= 5x^2 - 3x + 6$$.
=> Correct Answer: A ($$5x^2 - 3x + 6$$)
-
Problem 3
Simplify $$4x^2 y - 2xy^2 + 3x^2 y + 5xy^2 - 7$$
Show solution
Answer: $$7x^2 y + 3xy^2 - 7$$
Step 1: Group $$x^2 y$$ terms: $$(4x^2 y + 3x^2 y) = 7x^2 y$$.
Step 2: Group $$xy^2$$ terms: $$(-2xy^2 + 5xy^2) = 3xy^2$$.
Step 3: Keep constant: -7.
=> Combined expression $$= 7x^2 y + 3xy^2 - 7$$.
=> Correct Answer: A ($$7x^2 y + 3xy^2 - 7$$).
